Long Exposure

As a night owl I'm surprised I don't do more long exposure, but it of course can create some awesome effects and look really interesting.
I got incredibly lucky and managed to get some photos of the Aurora Borealis over Yellowstone. Its a life goal of mine to witness the Aurora, but I must say, it was a bit disappointing to the naked eye. I think the cameras long exposure exacerbates the effect of it.
I’ll have to do some more studying on long exposure and what might help with certain things, like getting the stars sharp, and a wider lens wouldn't hurt.
